RENTON -- Jesse Williams’ rookie season with the Seahawks took a detour on Monday, when the Australian-born defensive tackle from Alabama who was selected in the fifth round of April’s NFL Draft was placed on injured reserve.

The club also made eight other roster moves in getting a jump on the mandatory roster cut from 90 to 75 players that must be completed by Tuesday.

The contract of veteran wide receiver Brett Swain was terminated, and seven players were released: linebackers Kyle Knox and Craig Wilkins, wide receiver Perez Ashford, tight ends Jameson Konz and Andrei Lintz, defensive tackle Martin Parker and snapper Kyle Nelson.

The 6-foot-3, 325-pound Williams started the preseason opener against the San Diego Chargers at the three-technique tackle spot, but he has been bothered by a knee problem throughout training camp.

Konz, a seventh-round draft choice in 2010, had been re-signed on July 30. Ashford, Lintz and Parker also were added to the roster during training camp, while Swain, Nelson and Wilkins were added during the offseason and prior to camp. Knox had been signed to a future contract in January.

Monday’s moves means the club will have to make six more by Tuesday afternoon, when all clubs have to be down to 75 players.
