Police: Man hospitalized after brief pursuit, shootout with officers on US 101

PORT ANGELES, Wash. -- A man was shot multiple times by police after a brief pursuit ended in gunfire on US 101 Saturday morning.

Multiple agencies are investigating the incident near Monroe Road in Port Angeles.

Port Angeles Police says an officer attempted to make a routine traffic stop shortly before 10 a.m. after spotting a reckless driver on US 101.

According to investigators, the driver refused to stop, briefly fled east on 101, then crashed into a pickup truck.

Clallam County Sheriff's office identifies him as James Sweet.

Authorities said Sweet then left his car and fired a revolver at them.

At least four officers returned fire, hitting him multiple times.

Sweet was taken to Olympic Medical Center. Investigators said he was conscious and able to speak.

Two officers suffered superficial injuries, which police said was not related to the gunfire.

Because of the incident's location, traffic delays continued on US 101 throughout the course of the investigation.

The road was fully blocked for more than an hour. One lane has been reopened in each direction.
