Police pursuit of burglary suspects ends up with fiery finish

PORT ORCHARD - They may have planned the burglary, but they couldn't have planned the ending.

Police chased two burglary suspects on a high-speed chase from Port Orchard to the Bremerton National airport, ending in a fiery crash early Sunday morning, the Kitsap Sun reported.

Charter boat operator Randy Jones arrived at his storage unit just before 7 a.m. and saw a man closing the unit's door, the Sun reported.

Jones confronted the man, who got into a white van with another man and drove off, with Jones following in his vehicle, the paper reported.

As speeds reached almost 90 mph, Jones called 9-1-1 and police joined the pursuit, the Sun reported.

At one point, one of the suspects began throwing fishing gear from the van as it sped from police.

When the suspects' van reached Lake Flora road the van struck a curb, deflating the tires, the paper reported.

The van kept going, with sparks coming out of the vans' rims, and eventually causing the van to catch on fire, the Sun reported.

The two suspects fled on foot but were quickly caught by police, the paper reported.

Many of Jones' storage items were destroyed in the fire; the two suspects, aged 46 and 26, were booked into jail on burglary and attempting to elude police charges, the Sun reported.
