Regents weigh open process in hiring next UW president

SEATTLE (AP) — The board seeking to hire the next president of the University of Washington is considering whether to use an open search that would allow the public to vet finalists.

The Seattle Times reports the 10-member Board of Regents weighed the pros and cons at an all-day retreat in Sea-Tac Thursday.

A closed search is done entirely in secret. In an open search, the top three or five candidates are announced and the public has a chance to meet them and give their views.

Some regents said they preferred an internal candidate to replace Michael Young. He abruptly left the UW in February after less than three years to take a job as president of Texas A&M University.

The search is expected to last through the end of this year.
