SEATTLE (AP) — A woman who was imprisoned for two-and-a-half years in Mexico for leading a community police force has returned to Seattle.
Nestora Salgado returned to hugs from her husband and supporters cheering her name at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Tuesday.
Salgado's case has become a rallying point for activists who say the vigilante-like community groups that have sprung up across rural Mexico are cracking down on crimes ignored or fostered by corrupt government police. However, those groups, while legal, have had troubled relationships with state and federal authorities.
Salgado was freed from prison last week after a federal judge threw out charges of homicide and kidnapping.
She says she's happy to be back in the Seattle area, adding she at times didn't believe she'd be set free.
