Retired federal agent in shootout with burglar at Amboy home

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — Retired Customs agent Thomas Schenk spent 25 years as an armed federal agent without firing a shot.

But the 66-year-old was involved in a shootout in his own home at Amboy when he surprised a burglar on Christmas Eve.

Schenk tells The Oregonian he pulled his gun when he found a man loading a bag with his family's belongings. The man ran to a bedroom and fired a shot. Schenk fired back, ran outside and called 911 as the burglar fled.

Clark County deputies tracked down a shooting suspect last weekend in Vancouver, and two others also have been arrested in the case. They're facing charges of attempted murder, burglary, and rendering criminal assistance.
