SEATTLE -- A retired local teacher is preparing to hike at least 100 miles this summer in honor of his daughter who died of ovarian cancer.

Jack Kendrick, 85, of Edmonds tells the Everett Herald that he'll be collecting donations for the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Oregon and SW Washington.

The retired Shoreline biology teacher plans to spend several weeks along the Pacific Crest Trail in the Cascades.

"My goal is to do at least 100 miles," he told the Herald. I'm in pretty good shape for my age. I've been blessed with a good body."

Finding a cure for ovarian cancer is something that is important to Kendrick. In 1942 when he was 14, he lost his mother to the disease when she was 42-years-old. Then, 64 years later, in 2006, his daughter Michelle died from ovarian cancer at the age of 42.

He hopes his "Hiking for Michelle" campaign helps to raise money to help future victims.
