Richard Sherman gives back, helps families celebrate holidays with special event

RENTON, Wash.  --  Everyone was  waiting for the man with the bag at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center Monday night.  It wasn't Santa they wanted to see, but Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman.

Sherman's foundation hosted 25 local families at the VMAC.  With a help from his teammates, they took pictures, signed autographs, threw the ball around and presented gifts.

"We've never had anything like this before.  I think this is a blessing for me and our family," said Kimberly Tucker.

Sherman's Blanket Coverage Foundation began this Christmas tradition  in 2013, to ensure families in need don't go without for the holidays.

"We really want to make it special for these families. They deserve it. They're incredible people. You never really want to let circumstance dictate people's joy and happiness," Sherman said.

If yesterday is the past and tomorrow is the future, then Monday night really was a gift for the families here -- the kind of present not found in a Christmas bag.

"I want them to recapture the spirit of Christmas," said Sherman.

The presents these families walked away with Monday night could only be carried in their hearts.

"I want them to look at the world as a better place than when they came in," Sherman said.
