Seattle, Boston mayors join for day of service
BOSTON (AP) — Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has joined Boston Mayor Marty Walsh for a day of service in Boston with AmeriCorps members.
Walsh's office says the event on Saturday was part of a Super Bowl tradition held in the winning team's home city. The New England Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 for this year's NFL championship.
Murray and Walsh worked with Bill Basl, director of the AmeriCorps program at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Youth Programs, and other volunteers to help create a basketball court and repaint a kitchen and art room.
The Saturday event was organized by the state commission on service and volunteerism. AmeriCorps is a federal volunteer service program.
Murray and Walsh are taking part in a Sunday forum on urban poverty issues, before a U.S. Conference of Mayors task force meeting on Monday.
