Seattle drivers lose 63 hours to traffic, 10th worst in US
SEATTLE - Traffic congestion in Seattle continues to challenge commuters, with the city ranking 10th worst in the United States and 23rd globally for 2024, according to the latest INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard.
Drivers in Seattle lost an average of 63 hours sitting in traffic last year, marking a 9% increase from 2023. This congestion cost each driver approximately $1,128 in lost time and fuel, a significant economic burden for many residents.
The report highlights that peak traffic speeds in Seattle returned to 25 mph in 2024, down from 27 mph in 2023. During off-peak hours, speeds averaged 44 mph in 2024, remaining consistent with the previous year.
One of Seattle’s busiest corridors was identified as I-405 between Renton and Bellevue, particularly near the I-90 interchange. This stretch consistently sees heavy delays during peak commuting hours.
Seattle's congestion issues come as telecommuting decreases across tech-heavy metro areas. Work-from-home rates in Seattle dropped by 19% in 2024 compared to 2023, contributing to an uptick in daily commutes by car and transit.
Nationally, Seattle's traffic woes align with trends showing increased urban congestion as more employees return to office settings. The report suggests targeted transportation planning and investment could help alleviate the city's growing traffic challenges.
