LAKEWOOD, Wash. -- Police and animal control officers were called Wednesday to North Lake Drive SW, where a bear cub was trapped up in a tree by a couple of barking dogs, resident Donald Poling said.

They were able to tranquilize it and get it out of the tree safely.

Children in the neighborhood came to watch, and authorities turned it into a learning experience by letting them pet it and touch the cub's paws while it was out.

They then took the bear to a cage for transportation back into the wild.  The officers estimated the age of the cub to be about 2 or 3 years old.
