Sun shines on Seafair Sunday
LAKE WASHINGTON - It's the roar of the hydros, the oohs and ahhhs of the airshow, it's one of the biggest and best Seattle traditions: Seafair weekend. Thousands of race fans: small, tall, old and young will be along the beaches of Lake Washington, and on the water, taking in all of the action. Seafair has been a Seattle tradition since 1951. The hydro racing begins around 11 a.m. Sunday with the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane heats. The air show over Lake Washington, this year featuring The Patriots Jet Team, begins around 1:15 p.m.
A traffic reminder from the Washington State Department of Transportation: The Interstate 90 floating bridge will be closed to traffic for the air show, shutting down from 1:15 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. Sunday. The bridge highrises will be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. And I-90 east of Mercer Island will not be closed during the air show performance, although drivers should be aware that heavy traffic congestion during these closures often restricts access to the exits.
And to ensure that everyone out on the water is safe during Sunday's events, local law enforcement including the Washington State Patrol, King County Sheriff's Office, Seattle Police and Mercer Island Police will be doing a imparied boating enforcement. The new Boating Under the Influence law went into effect on July 28th. BUI becomes a gross misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum fine of $5,000 and up to 364 days in jail.
