The circus is coming -- to Stafford Creek prison

SEATTLE -- The New Old Time Chautauqua community of performers will be entertaining young and old alike on Aug. 6, but this "big tent" event isn't going to be open to the public -- it's being held at in the Big Yard of the Stafford Creek Corrections Center (SCCC).
The group of performers has offered to perform for prisoners and their families for free, Norah West with the Department of Corrections said.
With a Vaudeville Variety Show that is touted as "a knock-yer-socks-off" event that features nationally known performers as well as up-and-comers, music, dance, magic and comedy are part of the group's "aim to delight, educate, amaze, and provoke the imagination."
There will also be workshops in mask-making, samba dance and drumming, folk singing and clowning offered.
Prisoners who want to attend the event have to meet certain requirements, including no major infractions in the past six months, and they must remain infraction free until Aug. 6. They also have to complete some homework in order to attend and write a 150-300 word essay describing the importance of SCCC maintaining a violence free culture and how their behavior contributes to the prison's goal of reducing violence.
