The iPhone feature that could save your life -- here's how to set it up

In an emergency, first responders are often searching for a way to contact the victim's family. But what if the victim is not carrying a wallet and only has a phone?

Most smartphone users have a passcode on their phone. This security could prevent first responders from being able to access emergency contact information to contact your family if you are in an accident.

But there is some good news -- an iPhone app on your phone could allow someone to access your emergency contact and important health information. The feature is only available to users on iOS 8 or iOS 9.

Here's how to set it up:

1. Locate the "Health" app on your iPhone.

2. Open the app and click on "Medical ID" at bottom right. Enter your name, birth date, emergency contacts, and other relevant medical information.

It's important to consider the information you include in your "Medical ID." This information can be viewed by anyone with access to your phone, including someone who might steal your phone. It's recommended you only include information that would be relevant in a true emergency.

Once you have entered your information, click done.

3. When you are prompted to enter your passcode on the lock screen, click on "Emergency" and then click "Medical ID." Your information can now be displayed without unlocking your phone.
