Toddler left in hot car that reached 154 degrees is expected to recover

SALT LAKE CITY -- Police say a 1 1/2-year-old boy left in a hot car in Utah is expected to recover, according to KSTU.

Unified Police Department Lt. Lex Bell says the boy was found in Herriman Sunday and flown to the hospital in critical condition. He says the boy has been upgraded to fair condition.

Bell says boy's mother became sick and drove home, but forgot the child was in the car and went inside. He says father came home about 2 1/2 hours later and found the boy in the car with the windows up.

Paramedics say the boy's temperature was 105 degrees and his breathing was shallow. Bell says it was 154 degrees in the car.

"This car was 154 degrees inside, a few minutes after paramedics had opened the door and were doing their work on the child. So, probably was even higher than that," Lt. Bell said.

Police have not identified the people involved. Bell says police don't expect charges to be filed.

KSTU reports the news comes as a streak of hot weather continues in Utah. The National Weather Service said Salt Lake City topped 90 degrees for the 16th time this month on Sunday, meaning a record-breaking June is possible.
