Using pedal power in a disaster

SEATTLE -- Scientists have warned us for years that we're due for a big earthquake in the Pacific Northwest. And if a  7.2-magnitude earthquake hit, debris would be everywhere, freeway overpasses could give way and cars may not be usable.

But bicycles and their riders could come to the rescue. Riders with trailers or cargo bikes could transport food and medical supplies.

Cyclists will learn how they can help at Seattle’s first Disaster Relief Trials at the University of Washington campus Friday where they will go through obstacle courses and learn how to treat wounds, along with several other emergency skills.
