Voter Guide: Sound Transit 3 -- $54 Billion Expansion of Light Rail & Other Transit

SEATTLE -- The measure on the November ballot that will likely have the greatest impact on your bottom line is  Sound Transit 3. It’s also known as Proposition 1 on the ballots in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties.

The measure would add 62 more miles of light rail and 37 more stations.  It would expand Sounder Train service and add Bus Rapid Transit for Highway 522 and Interstate 405, along with more park-and-ride lots.

It will take decades to finish the project, with a completion date of 2041.

In part, ST3 will extend light rail north to Everett by 2036, west to Ballard by 2035, to West Seattle by 2030, east to Issaquah by 2041 and south to Tacoma by 2030.

In all, it’s a $54 billion package.  It includes a sales tax increase of 50 cents on a $100 purchase, an increase in vehicle license tabs ($80 per year on a $10,000 vehicle,) and also a property tax increase $100 per year on a $400,000 home.

It comes out to $169 per year for the typical adult -- higher taxes you’ll likely be paying beyond the completion date 25 years from now.  Leaving many asking, is it worth it?
