Ways to protect your home while you are away

EDMONDS -- There is a wrong way and right way when it comes to leaving your home.

The Edmonds Police department is inviting the public to attend a meeting Thursday night about how they can prevent becoming a victim. Whether it is identity theft, fraud or burglary, police will have advice for the public.

Thursday night's meeting in Edmonds is at City Hall at 250 5th Ave. N. It is from 6 p.m to 7:30 p.m.

Chris Pottinger and his wife, Diane, recently had their home in Bellevue burglarized while the family was away attending a graduation.

Pottinger believes the thief got into their house by using a garage door opener left in their unlocked car. The family had thousand of dollars worth of goods stolen.

The suspect was caught on surveillance camera and Bellevue police are hoping someone will recognize the suspect.

Bellevue police say take pictures of your jewelry, and do not store jewelry in your master bedroom. Consider a safe that is very heavy and bolted down to concrete. Officers say a 150-pound safe is not hard to steal.

Never leave your car in the driveway with a garage door opener inside the car.

Lock your door between the garage and any living space.
