Will Sun still shine? Pacific mayor recall vote counted today

PACIFIC, Wash. -- Pacific voters determine the fate of embattled Mayor Cy Sun Tuesday.

A King County Special Election Ballot asking voters whether or not Sun committed malfeasance, misfeasance or violated his oath of office during his term as mayor of the small Washington town went out earlier this month.

The state supreme court ruled that Sun violated his oath of office by trying to use the police department as his own personal force, and by jeopardizing the city’s liability insurance when he failed to fill vacant department positions.

According to the Auburn Reporter, Sun instructed then-acting Pacific Police Chief Jim Pickett to investigate who was responsible for flyers posted around the city asking "Who is the real Cy Sun?" The pamphlets allegedly accused Sun of negative dealings with some Oregon property he owns.

Sun refutes telling the police chief to investigate the pamphlets and said proposed candidates for office were rejected by the city council, which is frequently at odds with Sun.

Nearly 3,000 Pacific residents received ballots. Ballots must be post-marked no later than June 25 or returned to a ballot drop box no later than 8 p.m. Tuesday to be counted.
