Wrong-way driver dies after crashing into car carrying woman, 3 children

COVINGTON, Wash. -- A driver who went the wrong direction on State Route 18 overnight died after crashing into a car carrying a woman and three children.

According to Washington State Patrol, the man drove onto the highway near Covington around 10 p.m. He went about two miles before hitting a car near 272nd Street.

Troopers say he then crashed into a second car with a family inside. The woman and her three children are expected to be okay.

The driver was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Investigators said the driver, a Seattle man, did not appear to be impaired and it is unclear why he was driving the wrong way on the highway.
