Mariners to hire Scott Servais, former Angels assistant GM, as manager
SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners will hire former Angels assistant general manager Scott Servais as the new team manager, the team confirmed Friday.
The LA Times beat reporter for the Los Angeles Angels, Mike DiGiovanna, broke the news on Twitter.
The team confirmed the report Friday in a press release.
Servais has no managerial experience at either the minor league or big league level, DiGiovanna reported.
Servais played in the big leagues for ten years as a catcher, spending most of his time with the Houston Astros. Following his playing career, he worked as assistant general manager under new Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto when the two worked for the Angels.
When Dipoto left the team in the 2015 season, Servais interviewed for the Angels general manager position.
Servais, 48, has known Dipoto for a long time, the Mariners GM said.
"Through the course of the 20-plus years I've known Scott," Dipoto said. "I've come to see him as one of the most complete, well balanced and inclusive baseball people in the country."
Servais is the the 17th full-time skipper in Mariners history.
