Nneka Ogwumike to re-sign with Seattle Storm, per report
Free agent forward Nneka Ogwumike is set to re-sign with the Seattle Storm per an announcement by her sister, Chiney Ogwumike, on ESPN on Friday night.
"She wants me to break the news, so I'm going to do it," said Chiney, who is an ESPN basketball analyst. "Nine-time WNBA All-Star, WNBA champion, and president of the Players' Association, Nneka Ogwumike is re-signing with the Seattle Storm."
The backstory:
Ogwumike, 34, just completed her first season with the Storm after 12 seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks. Ogwumike averaged 16.7 points and 7.6 rebounds a game last year for Seattle while playing just shy of 32 minutes a night and earning second-team All-WNBA honors.
Following the trade of Jewell Loyd to the Las Vegas Aces, the Storm have fully moved on from their most recent championship roster in 2020. Sue Bird retired after the 2022 season and Breanna Stewart also left to sign with the New York Liberty. Loyd's trade marks the most recent major departure from that championship group.
The Storm acquired the No. 2 overall pick in the draft in the Loyd deal, which should help the team find a possible impact performer for the future.
Free agents in the WNBA can officially sign contracts with new teams beginning on Saturday.
The Source: The announcement was made by ESPN basketball analyst Chiney Ogwumike.
