The Seattle Seahawks had a second interview with Detroit Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley on Tuesday for their open offensive coordinator position, per a report by Dan Graziano of ESPN.com.
With the Lions losing to the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round on Saturday, the Seahawks gained the ability to bring Fraley in for an in-person interview. Their first meeting with Fraley came in a video interview during the first week of the playoffs.
Fraley is the third candidate reported to have a second interview with the Seahawks, joining New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, and Minnesota Vikings assistant coach Grant Udinski.
Dig deeper:
Fraley, 47, has spent the last seven seasons on the Lions coaching staff with the last five years in the role of offensive line coach.
Fraley spent 11 seasons in the NFL after entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Robert Morris University in 2000. He earned the starting center job with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2001 and made 31 starts over five seasons with the team. He also was the starting center for the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX against the New England Patriots at the end of the 2004 season.
Fraley made 123 starts in 142 career games played with the Eagles, Cleveland Browns, and St. Louis Rams.
Fraley began his coaching journey with the University of San Diego in 2012, and coached one year with San Jose State in 2013 before moving to the NFL ranks with the Minnesota Vikings in 2014. He spent three years as an assistant offensive line coach with the Vikings before a one-year return to college at UCLA in 2017. He joined Dan Campbell's staff as an assistant offensive line coach in 2018 and was promoted to offensive line coach in 2020.
The offensive line and the running game were two significant weaknesses for the Seahawks this past season. Per a report from Albert Breer of The MMQB.com, Fraley has done homework on potential candidates to join him in a new role as a passing game coordinator to compliment his background.
With Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson leaving Detroit to become the new head coach of the Chicago Bears, it's also reasonable that Fraley would be a possible candidate to be promoted to offensive coordinator in Detroit in Johnson's place, or join Johnson's staff with the Bears as well.
Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown, and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich have also had initial interviews with the Seahawks. Neither one has been reported to have had a second interview for the job.
