Starting UW quarterback retires from college football, citing chronic hip injury

SEATTLE -- Huskies quarterback Cyler Miles is retiring from college football due to a chronic hip injury, head coach Chris Petersen announced Monday.

According to the University of Washington, medical personnel advised Miles that it would be against his best interest to continue to play on the injury, which has persisted throughout his career.

Miles, who would have been a fourth-year junior this fall, started 12 games for the Huskies last season and played in a total of 20 games during his UW career.

"I am grateful to Coach Petersen and his staff for all the opportunities I have been given here at Washington," Miles said in a statement on the UW website. "I am disappointed that my hip injuries will not allow me to continue playing, but I am committed to earning my UW degree and will leave the program with many great friendships and valuable lessons learned."

Miles was suspended from the team by Petersen for spring practices and the first game of the season last year over his involvement in two physical assaults near campus. Miles was not charged in either case.

According to the Seattle Times, the Huskies have three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster: junior Jeff Lindquist, K.J. Carta-Samuels and Jake Browning. And the team recently added junior college transfer Tony Rodriguez.
