Spokane County Sheriff's Office warns about 'spoofing' scam
SPOKANE COUNTY -- An alert to everyone in the Spokane area and beyond -- scammers are calling people, lying that they're with the Spokane County Sheriff's Office, that there's a warrant out for their arrest, or a family member, and they're going to get criminally charged if they don't pay a fee. The scammers are good too -- doing what's called "spoofing" -- where they rig the caller ID's to make it really look like you're getting a call from the sheriff's office. First off, the Spokane County Sheriff's Office says it has never and will never make these type of calls -- just like all law enforcment agencies across the state. So, that's your first red flag if you get a call like this. Bottom line, if you get a call like this -- wherever you are -- hang up immediately, and call your local police or sheriff to let them know about it.
