OLYMPIA – Preliminary data shows 93 percent of seniors in the class of 2013 have passed the state reading and writing high school proficiency exams (HSPE), or state-approved alternatives, before they graduate.

“The HSPE passage rate continues to rise,” State Superintendent Randy Dorn said. “Our students perform quite well on reading and writing exams. Teachers, students and families have been working hard to achieve these results.”

The preliminary results from the math end-of-course exam will not be available until late August. The EOC, in either algebra I or geometry, is given to students during the last three weeks of school. Final results for all exams are expected to be released in the fall.

The first year students can attempt the reading and writing HSPEs is 10th grade. They may continue to attempt to pass the test, or choose a state-approved alternative, until they meet the requirement and receive a diploma at the end of their senior year.
