Canada's House of Commons votes to join airstrikes against ISIS

OTTAWA -- A divided House of Commons voted Tuesday in favor of sending Canadian aircraft and personnel to join coalition airstrikes in Iraq against ISIS targets, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

The CBC said that in the debate leading up to the vote, Conservatives insisted it is Canada’s duty, while opposition parties warned of a potential major mistake.

Six CF-18 fighter-bombers, two CP-140 surveillance planes, one aerial tanker aircraft and 600 personnel have been tapped to join coalition airstrikes in Iraq for up to six months, but there will be no troops directly involved in ground combat, according to the motion, the CBC said.

The motion passed with 157 voting in favor, while 134 voted against it.
