Inmates supply prison kitchen with their own garden veggies
A community of vegetable gardens run by inmates at a Washington state prison is expanding, thanks to the success of the program.
Since 2010, inmates at the Airway Heights Corrections Center near Spokane have been growing vegetables that are used to feed prisoners.
According to the Spokesman-Review, this year prison officials expanded the program to include three smaller gardens near inmate cell blocks, maintained entirely by offenders in those blocks.
The inmates who maintain the gardens don’t get paid for their work. But prison officials say the work provides other kinds of benefits to the offenders housed there.
