March honors professor who was struck by car in Capitol Hill
SEATTLE -- A march on Capitol Hill Sunday honored a poet and professor of literature, who was killed last month while walking his dog across Belmont Avenue E near Bellevue Place E.
“I'm just so shocked. I can't process it. I saw him the day before," Chris Longo said.
79-year-old Max Richards was legally crossing the avenue when he was struck. According to Seattle Police, the driver showed no signs of impairment and was interviewed and released pending further investigation.
Marchers want to see more “slow down” signs throughout the area to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.
"He wasn't a young man, but he was in perfect health… I mean, God, he was mowed down a block from his house," Longo said.
Richards' wife and son, who traveled all the way from Australia, joined the march.
The walk ended at Cal Anderson Park where they shared memories and stories of Richards' life.
