Marysville School District to make changes at high school after deadly shooting
MARYSVILLE -- School officials want to ease Marysville-Pilchuck High School students back into the classroom after Friday's deadly shooting.
The Marysville School District will make several changes, including closing the school cafeteria when classes start again next week. There will also be grief counselors and additional officers on campus.
“We are going to really have to basically look, systematically look, through every part of the student day, both the structure and the content, as we ease our students back into the routines of school,” Superintendent Becky Berg said.
Since the shooting, Berg has spoken with the former principal of Columbine High School in Colorado and other school leaders who have dealt with school shootings across the country. Berg said they are providing advice and recommendations for helping students cope with the shooting.
“Unfortunately, there are a whole network of school districts and schools that have gone through this and many of them have reached out to us,” said Berg.
Students have voiced concerns about going back inside the cafeteria where the gunman, Jaylen Fryberg, shot five students.
Berg said the district is considering re-modeling that section of the building. The school will also take a look at changing the sound of the fire alarms, which rang out after the first shots were fired.
The school reopens Monday.
