Meet the Delegates: Jessa Lewis from Washington's 7th Congressional District

SEATTLE -- Jessa Lewis is a single mother who has gotten through the toughest of times, but became a delegate to the Democratic National  Convention this year.

Lewis and her daughter were forced to live out of their car once and, like so many others, the single mother struggled to get by.

"It was a very dark and uncertain time in my life.

"I am a member of the middle class that's being squeezed. Rents are expensive here in Seattle. I have a six-figure student loan debt from my master's program. I work really hard at a good job and I'm struggling to get by."

For her, motivation to change the system pushed her into politics.

And what Bernie Sanders was saying on the campaign trail hit home.

At the Democratic state convention in Tacoma in July, Lewis was elected to the national convention.

"When I found out I was going to be a national delegate, my daughter ran up, hugging me, telling me how proud she was. Absolutely surreal," she said.

"What being a delegate means to me is almost a chance to give meaning to my life.  It`s a chance to speak for those who don`t have a voice," Lewis said.
