Seattle construction to affect Route 40 in Fremont, Westlake in 2025

Construction in Seattle's Fremont and Westlake neighborhoods is set to ramp up in 2025.

The Seattle Department of Transportation recently announced the beginning of the Route 40 Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor Project, which aims to improve sidewalks, bike lanes, public transit and more area infrastructure.

Construction is expected to start in early February and last through 2025.

During the project, residents in Fremont and those along Westlake Avenue North should expect traffic closures, detours, lane reductions, and temporary utility service impacts.

Crews will perform trenching work to manage water flow, install new signal poles, and lay pipes or cables underground.

The project aims to improve transit travel times along Route 40, which passes through Seattle's most popular neighborhoods. SDOT says traffic and Metro ridership has grown every year, and the hope is that these improvements will create 5-10% transit travel time reductions, and approximately 14-17% reductions between Ballard and Downtown.

SDOT provided a project map of all planned improvements along Route 40:
