Suspect who ran from traffic stop found stuck in mud hours later (PHOTOS, VIDEO)
THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. -- A man who police pulled over for speeding ran off and disappeared -- until someone heard screams in a swamp more than five hours later.
According to Thurston County officials, officers attempted the traffic stop around 7:15 p.m. Saturday along 110th Ave SW near the Black River. The man jumped out of the car and ran off.
Officials said police did not chase the suspect because, at the time, he was only accused of speeding.
Around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, police received reports of screaming in the Black River swamp area. About 200 yards from the road, first responders found a man stuck in the mud up to his waist.
Officials called for air support, but helicopters were not able to respond because of the fog.
The man was stuck in the mud for an estimated 16 hours before crews were able to rescue him from the marsh around 10:30 a.m.
Medics transported the hypothermic suspect to the hospital.
Police said he ran because he had felony warrants. They have not identified the suspect.
