Teenage girls possibly raced cars before crash

SEATTLE -- A race between two cars may have contributed to a crash involving two 17-year-old girs early Wednesday morning in south Seattle, police reported.
According to police, a Nissan Altima driven by a 17-year-old female was traveling northbound in the 3800 block of Rainier Avenue S. around 1:20 a.m. when the teenage driver lost control of the car. The car careened off the roadway, hit a telephone pole and a fire hydrant before colliding with a large tree.
Both the driver and her 17-year-old friend were injured in the collision and taken to Harborview Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police believe the driver may have been racing another car at the time of the crash. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs contributed to the incident.
The Traffic Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the crash. The identity of the girls has not been released.
