Amazon to pay France $250 million in back taxes

PARIS -- Online retailer Amazon has reached a deal with French authorities to pay about $250 million in back taxes.Amazon was asked in 2012 to pay the amount over earnings made in 2006-2010 and has since been involved in a dispute with tax authorities.Details of the deal have not been revealed.The company said Monday it has reached an "overall settlement agreement with the French tax authorities on past issues, and our main objective remains to provide the best possible buying experience for our customers in France, where we have invested more than 2 billion euros since 2010, and created more than 5,500 permanent jobs."Amazon last year reached a similar deal with Italian authorities to end a 100-million-euro ($118 million) dispute over its tax payments from 2011-15.

Microsoft stops fixing security flaw on PCs with AMD chips

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Microsoft has temporarily stopped fixing a serious security flaw on personal computers powered by certain chips from Advanced Micro Devices because the repair is crippling the affected machines.The suspension will delay efforts to protect the AMD machines from potential intrusions caused by security bugs known as "Spectre" and "Meltdown." The problem primarily threatens devices running on processors from AMD's larger rival, Intel, but also could cause trouble on devices running on other chips.Microsoft began offering updates to its Windows operating system to address the flaw last week, but is withholding the repair from some AMD-powered machines that have been rendered inoperable by its fix.

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian President Michel Temer has rejected selling control of jet maker Embraer to Boeing.The Brazilian company confirmed Thursday that it is in talks with Chicago-based Boeing regarding a possible deal.But the Brazilian government has veto power over a change in controlling interest in Embraer, one of the largest makers of mid-size aircrafts in the world.At a breakfast with media in Brasilia on Friday, Temer said the government would welcome an infusion of foreign capital into Embraer, but would not consider ceding majority control.Temer also said the two companies had not previously informed him that they were in talks.Boeing's approach to Embraer is seen as a response to competitor Airbus, which has plans to buy a majority stake of Canadian jet maker Bombardier Inc.
