Amazon 'cycle tracks' encourage biking downtown

SEATTLE -- Online retailer Amazon will build "cycle tracks" outside its new, three-tower Denny Triangle development, demonstrating what a downtown network of dedicated bicycle lanes could look like, The Seattle Times reported.

The tracks, which have a physical barrier to separate cyclists from cars and pedestrians, will be built on 7th Avenue along the two-block stretch of its office complex.

Amazon also plans to create stalls for about 400 bikes in each of its towers, three times the number required under city code, according to the Times. The bold plan is raising the bar on what Seattle companies are doing to encourage bicycle commuting.

City planners have proposed 101 miles of cycle track throughout Seattle, but have yet to obtain City Council approval and funding, the Times reported. City officials want the cycle track on Seventh Avenue to eventually extend to Pine Street. Amazon is providing the city $250,000 to study that possibility.
