Two burglary suspects were taken into custody after they tried to escape in a rowboat in Jefferson County on Tuesday morning.

At about 8 a.m., a homeowner near the Hood Canal Bridge reported a burglary in progress.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the homeowner said a woman and a man, dressed in black, had broken into a storage container and stole over $11,000 worth of gold and jewelry.

The suspects were then seen leaving in an SUV with covered plates, and deputies said the victim threw a piere of firewood at their windshield, shattering the glass.

As deputies from Jefferson and Kitsap counties responded, a deputy located the SUV, which was involved in a rollover crash near Port Gamble and the suspects ran away from the scene.

According to investigators, the suspects stole a small rowboat, used a piece of plywood as an improvised oar and tried to escape by water.

The boat capsized, and the suspects swam to shore, where deputies took them into custody.

The suspects were booked into the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office jail.
