BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The driver who found plane crash survivor Autumn Veatch, 16, and took her to get help recounted Wednesday where he first saw her and how she appeared out of place.
The driver, Matt, said he and his friend were on a day trip to Okanogan County Monday when they stopped at a rest area off U.S. Route 20.
That's when he saw a girl who appeared out of place and somewhat traumatized, he said.
The girl, Autumn Veatch, was looking for help after surviving a small plane crash Saturday that killed her two step-grandparents. She spent two days in the wilderness, hiking from the plane crash site to eventually find the highway.
Matt drove Autumn to a store in nearby Mazama, Wash., where she called police. She was then taken to Three Rivers Hospital in Brewster, where she was hospitalized for a day for severe dehydration, burns to her hands and bruises. She returned to her home to Bellingham Tuesday night and is recovering.
Matt, alluding to all Autumn had gone through, called her a "super star."
