Flu season tracking may be affected by shutdown
More than 8,000 workers have been furloughed from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The agency's head says this could seriously hamper the CDC's efforts to track deadly diseases, including the flu, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Flu season started last month in the U.S.
But the CDC says they don't have the staff to track any multi-state outbreaks.
Right now, the agency's roughly 4,000 remaining employees are tasked with making sure the CDC can respond to a major outbreak once the government is back up and running.
