The Seattle Fire Department's hazmat team is investigating an ammonia hydroxide leak at the Holgate Center in Seattle's SODO neighborhood.

Fire personnel were called to reports of a hazardous material spill at the Holgate Center around 10:30 a.m. Friday. The building was evacuated before 11:00 a.m., and a hazmat team went inside to identify the substance.

Within an hour, officials determined the substance was ammonia hydroxide, a corrosive solution used in cleaners and refrigerants. Some health departments rank it as a substance of ‘serious’ threat, and exposure can potentially be deadly in high enough amounts.

One person was treated for exposure, and did not need to be transported to the hospital.

Firefighters were seen hosing down items that may have come in contact with the corrosive substance.
