Pierce County grocery workers to vote on strike
TACOMA -- More than 4,000 Pierce County grocery workers will meet Wednesday to decide whether or not to strike in an effort to secure higher wages, health care and other benefits.
According to the Tacoma News Tribune, members of the Local 367 United Food and Commercial Workers were slated to meet throughout the day at the Landmark Convention Center in Tacoma. There, union members would cast ballots to authorize a strike against QFC, Fred Meyer, Albertsons and Safeway.
The vote is one of many happening around the region, as more than 30,000 grocery workers prepare to strike. A final deadline for the strike has not yet been set, the News Tribune reported, and negotiators are not currently bargaining.
Grocery workers in North Snohomish County voted Monday to authorize a strike.
Food and Commercial Workers of Pierce County last hit the picket lines 1989, the News Tribune reported.
