Seattle among top 5 US cities millennials are moving to
SEATTLE - Seattle has emerged as one of the most attractive destinations for millennials, ranking fifth among large U.S. cities in a recent study by SmartAsset.
The study, which analyzed migration patterns for individuals aged 25 to 44, highlights Seattle’s appeal with its mix of job opportunities and vibrant lifestyle.
Over the course of 2023, 86,049 millennials moved to Seattle, making up 11.51% of the city's population. This influx underscores the city's draw for young professionals and families alike. Of these newcomers, 23,515 came from other states, while 5,731 arrived from abroad.
Seattle also boasts the largest proportion of millennials relative to its total population among the top-ranked cities, with 42.09% of its residents falling within this age group.
The study highlighted Seattle's strong job market, led by industries such as technology, healthcare and e-commerce, combined with a median household income of $120,608, as factors that make it an attractive option for those seeking career advancement.
Housing affordability remains a challenge, however, with median monthly housing costs outpacing many places in the country. Despite this, millennials are choosing Seattle for its dynamic culture, outdoor recreation opportunities and robust economic prospects, the study noted.
The SmartAsset study evaluated 271 U.S. cities, focusing on the percentage of millennial newcomers relative to the population. Seattle outperformed larger metropolitan areas like Los Angeles and New York City, showcasing its enduring appeal for the younger generation.
"Seattle’s ability to attract millennials plays a significant role in shaping the city’s future, impacting everything from the housing market to local businesses," the study noted.
Other cities in the top five included Alexandria, Virginia; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Denver, Colorado; and Sandy Springs, Georgia.
As millennials continue to influence housing trends and local economies, Seattle’s ranking reinforces its position as a hub for innovation, opportunity and growth.
