Thirsty? WWU plans ban on bottled water
BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Western Washington University will become the largest public university in the country to ban the sale of bottled water on campus, KPLU.org reported Monday.
The ban, pushed by the group Students for Sustainable Water, was put in place because of the environmental impact bottled water can have, and because many students believe water should be a human right.
"When corporations begin to extract water on huge scales, it really commodities and turns what should be a shared resource into a commodity to make a profit off it," Carolyn Bowie, the co-president of WWU Students for Sustainable Water told KPLU.
The student body voted to approve the plastic bottled water ban last spring. Officials are planning on implementing the ban shortly, even though it could lead to $60,000 in lost revenue from the sale of water. Some student groups have agreed to reimburse any cuts in sales.
The school would join Evergreen State College and Seattle University as other schools in the state to forbid the sale of bottled water on campus.
