SEATTLE - From Washington D.C. to here at home, thousands rallied for this year's People's March (a rebranding of the Women's March from previous years).
This weekend, crowds hit the streets for a demonstration in Seattle. The 2017 march here drew 175,000 attendees.
SDOT encouraged drivers to use alternative routes along the Women's March area from Cal Anderson Park to Seattle Center from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Big picture view:
The demonstration started off at 9 a.m. on Jan. 18 with a rally at Cal Anderson Park and speeches from several community leaders, including newly sworn-in Governor Bob Ferguson.
Demonstrators say they were marching to demand racial justice, reproductive freedom, and women's rights.
What they're saying:
"Today we are not just marching for women, we are marching for all who have been marginalized. The theme of our march is put the unity back into community and so we’re in a place right now where there is a lot of divisiveness," said Lisa Price, lead organizer.
Governor Bob Ferguson said, while his job is different this time around, his stance is not.
"Eight years ago, I was the first attorney general in the country to challenge Donald Trump in court, and you know what happened-we won right? And my team went on to beat him over 50 times in court, over and over again."
The governor continued, saying, "I can assure you if this administration engages In any action that violates the law that exceeds his authority and harms your rights, or the people of this state or our environment, I will stand up and we will stop him again."
The march comes just two days before former President Donald Trump's inauguration in Washington D.C. on Jan. 20.
Due to frigid temperatures, the parade and inauguration viewing were moved indoors.
