Everett Police working to solve mysterious death after missing sex offender's partial remains found

Everett Police are reaching out to the public to help put the pieces together regarding the last moments of a sex offender who vanished, and whose remains were eventually found two years later.

Snohomish County Sheriff?s deputies say South Precinct areas around Airport Road and Highway 99 and 128th and 4th Ave are seeing a high influx of crime. ?Crimes of violence have really skyrocketed,? said Deputy Brendan Pike who took The Spotlight?s cameras on ride-along. He?s one of five deputies serving an area the size of Tacoma. Despite their staffing challenges, they are on a pro-active mission to protect businesses, arrest criminals and provide resources to those ready to accept help.

Right now, the suspect charged with killing a teenage girl in 1993 is sitting in Western State Hospital waiting for doctors to clear him for trial. Snohomish County Sheriff's Detective Brad Walvatne says Alan Dean was identified as a suspect through genetic genealogy. He was arrested in 2020 but detectives have continued to argue that he is incompetent to stand trial. Melissa was kidnapped from her home during a struggle. Her body was found in a ravine the next day in Everett. She had been strangled. To solve a case like this, Det. Walvatne says he goes to the beginning to meticulously build a timeline.

CAPTURED: A 17-year-old and a 16-year-old are in custody, charged as juveniles, for first-degree robbery. Detectives say after the Seattle carjacking spree, the suspects committed an armed carjacking in Tukwila. They drove the stolen vehicle to Federal Way where they shot up a house. Officers responded and arrested them, despite their attempts to escape. They will be also looking at charges of drive-by shooting, unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest.
