How do cops use surveillance video to help catch ID thieves?

canyouidmeQ: My daughter's car got broken into, and the bad guys used one of her credit cards to charge nearly $500 worth of stuff. I want to know how cops use surveillance video from stores to identify suspects like the ones in my daughter's case? -- Arlene in KentA: "It's those offenders that commit a crime, then commit another crime, then commit another crime, chances are if there's some sort of property crime that turns into a fraud situation, we have an opportunity to get surveillance at the store or bank where that secondary crime is committed. And, it's generally going to be started by the Burglary/Theft Unit, where the crime originally occurred. If it's more of like an ID theft, where they go to a bank, or write a bad check, or uses someone's VISA, then it would go to our Fraud/Forgery Financial Exploitations Unit. But same kind of thing. We want to make sure we're getting good quality still images of bad people doing bad things, then we'll send it out and hopefully get people arrested." -- Seattle Police Sgt. Sean Whitcomb
