Seattle closures announced for Jan. 9 honoring President Jimmy Carter
SEATTLE - Federal and national closures will mark Jan. 9, as a day of remembrance for former President Jimmy Carter, following President Joe Biden’s declaration of a national day of mourning.

What's closed on Jan. 9?
All federal offices will be closed
This includes all non-essential federal offices, agencies and departments. Employees required to work will be notified by their supervisors.
The US Postal Service will be closed
On Jan. 9, there will be no mail delivery or retail operations at USPS locations nationwide.
Some courts will be closed
On Jan. 9, the Supreme Court building will be closed; no arguments were scheduled for that day.
Stock markets will be closed
On Jan. 9 the stock markets will be closed in observance. This includes the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq.

Other observances on Jan. 9
The day coincides with President Carter’s state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Flags across the nation have been ordered to fly at half-staff for 30 days.
What's open on Jan. 9?
While the national day of mourning affects many federal operations, most state and local offices, businesses and schools are expected to remain open unless otherwise announced. This includes the King County Courthouse and Seattle Municipal Court.
When was the last day of mourning issued in the US?
This marks the first national day of mourning since December 2018, when the nation paid tribute to former President George H.W. Bush.
