The generations-old Foss Maritime shipyard in Seattle has permanently closed, the company announced Saturday.

The shipyard was located in North Queen Anne and was the company's primary shipyard after they closed their Rainier, Oregon site in 2018. Foss Maritime says the closure was decided after "regular evaluation of business lines" and follows their effort to "improve the viability" of the shipyard over the years.

For the shipyard employees now without a job, the company says they will continue to receive salary, benefits and an average of overtime wages through the end of the year.

"While the closure of the Seattle shipyard is a strategic decision for the future of Foss, it is not a decision we have taken lightly," said Foss Maritime president Will Roberts. "We have employees and families who have been with us for decades; our priority is assisting them in this transition."

The company says it will use other Pacific Northwest shipyards to meet maintenance and repair needs for their vessels.
