Family, friends remember boy killed in Lynnwood, WA shooting
An investigation is underway after a boy was found dead, and another was injured in Lynnwood on New Year's Eve.
LYNNWOOD, Wash. - An investigation is underway after one boy died and another was injured in a Lynnwood shooting on New Year's Eve.
Police are still looking for the two suspects they say are involved in the shooting.
It happened around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday night when the boy's body was found in a parking lot near 68th Avenue West.
Video released of possible suspects in Lynnwood shooting
Lynnwood Police believe the two people captured on video running across a sidewalk are the suspects in a New Year's Eve shooting that killed one teen and hurt another.
They found another boy nearby with non-life-threatening injuries.
The memorial grew steadily all day Wednesday and at one point, there were more than 100 people who had stopped by to pay their respects.
Parents and kids say the shooting is a tragic start to the new year.
"He meant a lot to me," said a young friend who had come to pay her respects alongside her father. "It really hurts he’s not going to be here anymore, but he’s in a better place up there."
The friend and her father didn't want to be fully identified for privacy reasons. They told us the young man, his name written on the sidewalk near the memorial, was well-loved.
"They were friends, so I used to drop her off at the parents' to hang out, spend time together just like normal kids," said the dad.
"He always knew how to make everything better, he was always just there, just making us laugh, never failed to be there," said the girl.
Friends told FOX 13 that the number 14 posted on the memorial sign, pictured below, represents his young age. That has not been confirmed by the police.
They say he loved watching Edmonds-Woodway High School football games and snacking. A bag of his favorites was left at the memorial Wednesday.
"He liked his chips, liked his snacks," said his friend.
A young boy told us off camera that the teen had gone to visit a friend at the apartment complex to say ‘hi’ on New Year's Eve night. When he left that friend's apartment, he heard up to eight shots ringing out minutes later.
Those who live in the complex, which, according to the sign outside, is associated with YWCA Seattle, King and Snohomish, say they didn't hear any loud voices outside before shots rang out.
"This is something we've been seeing more often in the area," said the dad that FOX 13 talked to.
Lynnwood Police say another injured boy was found nearby and rushed to the hospital, while two suspects fled on foot.
"As a parent, we really need to pay attention to these guys, the boys, you know. The first thing they need is God in their families. Once we are missing that, we have that empty spot. They think they fill it with something else, with friends, which is normal, but they need God, we need God," said the dad.
Even though it's still unclear exactly what happened, FOX 13 talked to a different parent who also wanted to remain anonymous. He's asking parents to check their kids' backpacks before they head out to make sure they aren't carrying guns or weapons, and to know where they are at and what friends that they are hanging out with, either through communication or the use of GPS. He says it could prevent more gun violence.
Lynnwood Police say the boy who was injured and taken to the hospital is expected to survive.
