The Federal Way Police Department said one person is dead and three more were taken to the hospital after a crash involving multiple vehicles, including one belonging to a Washington State trooper, occurred early Sunday morning on I-5 South.

What we know:

The Federal Way Police Department said that around 3:40 a.m., officers were asked to assist the Washington State Patrol with a crash involving a trooper on I-5 near South 336th Street.

Following an investigation, officials say they learned that a trooper had attempted to make a traffic stop on I-5 South on a man who was suspected of driving under the influence.

Police say the man refused to stop and fled along I-5 South for about 13 miles.

As he was fleeing the scene, the suspect's vehicle hit another vehicle that was not involved in the chase and was carrying four people along the roadway. One of the people in the uninvolved vehicle died at the scene from their injuries, police said.

Officials said that the other three people in that vehicle were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Additionally, the suspect lost control of their vehicle after the initial crash, which led to a crash with a pursuing trooper's vehicle.

What's next:

Police said the driver, a 25-year-old man from Kent, was arrested for DUI, eluding, and vehicular homicide.

He will be booked into King County Jail.
